Frequently Asked Questions
Simple answers to the questions I’m asked most often. If you don’t see what you need here, just get in touch.
Confidentiality
Is counselling confidential?
Yes. What you share in our sessions stays between us. I work within the BACP Ethical Framework, which places confidentiality at the heart of counselling.
Are there any exceptions to confidentiality?
Very rarely. If I believe you or someone else is at serious risk of harm, or if I am required to disclose information by law, I may need to share relevant details with the appropriate people. I would always try to discuss this with you first.
Do you keep notes?
I keep brief, confidential session notes to help me remember our work together. They are stored securely and handled in line with GDPR.
Will my GP or employer know I'm seeing you?
No. You do not need a referral, and I will not contact your GP or employer unless you ask me to.
Sessions
How long is a counselling session?
Each session is 50 minutes long. We meet at the same time each week, unless we agree otherwise.
Are sessions online or in person?
At the moment I am offering online sessions only. This means you can attend from a quiet, private space at home.
What happens in the first session?
We will talk about what has brought you to counselling, what you hope to gain from it, and how we might work together. You can ask anything you like, and there is no pressure to share more than you are comfortable with.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on you. Short-term work is often six to twelve sessions, while longer-term work can help with deeper self-awareness and understanding the roots of a problem. We can review regularly.
What if I need to cancel?
I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or rearrange a session. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice may still be charged.
How to get started
How do I book a session?
The easiest first step is to message me on Facebook or use the contact form on this site. I will ask you to complete a short assessment form, and then you can book a free introductory phone call.
What is the free introductory call?
It is a complimentary 10–15 minute phone call with no obligation. It gives us a chance to meet briefly, talk about what you need, and decide if we would like to work together. Please make sure you supply your telephone number when booking.
Do I need a referral from a doctor?
No. You can contact me directly. A referral is not needed for private counselling.
How much does counselling cost?
Counselling sessions are £60.00 each. The initial telephone consultation is free.
